With reference to the new MCO and the declaration of Emergency earlier this week, we wish to advise all participants that we have reviewed the competition process in order to ensure compliance with the new additional guidelines and SOPs.

We wish to inform all participants that due to the ongoing works of the RTS Link Station, there are no changes possible to the competition schedule.

However, we have amended the whole of Section E (pp 42 and 43) of the Competition Document (issued 23 Nov 2020).

The submission process will now be a digital submission, further details with this update available in the Downloads section.

Further changes, if and when they occur, will be informed to all participants soonest possible.

Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and MRT Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (MRT Corp) is today delighted to announce the launch of the Façade Design Ideas Competition for the RTS Link Station located in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru.

The RTS Link Station is a major national public project conceived as a new southern Johor gateway connecting Malaysia and Singapore and sets a new level in the historical relationship and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. The much anticipated project will see about 10,000 passengers per hour commuting each way to help ease traffic congestion on the Johor Causeway as well as being a key economic catalyst to bring forth mutual prosperity and growth, bringing the peoples of both nations closer together.

With the groundbreaking ceremony successfully completed yesterday, the competition launched today is a single stage, national open design ideas competition configured to seek the best design solutions and input for the 3-storey elevated station façade design in terms of architectural design, innovation and technology, constructional efficiency, sustainability, ease of maintenance and function. The objective is to design a creative new station identity and image for this project of national importance and the challenge to Malaysia’s best architects and designers to develop a façade design concept that encompasses the culture, heritage, essence and characteristics of a Johor identity within a modern facility that also projects the dynamism and confident outlook of the state of Johor in the 21st century.

Open for registrations today, the competition will run for nine weeks. Participants are encouraged to form multidisciplinary consortium teams of specialists and experts, including façade designers, engineers, mobility experts, etc. The winning scheme selected by the distinguished Jury Panel, apart from a RM 250,000 First Prize, will also have the opportunity to see the design realised by the existing project team.

DYMM Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj, Sultan of Johor has consented to be the Competition Patron and Jury Chair.

Registrations close on 11 Dec 2020 and the submission of all design ideas is 25 January 2021. Announcements of the winners is expected by in February 2021.

MRT Corp

MRT Corp was established in 2011 and is fully owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated. We are at the forefront of metro rail developments in Malaysia.

In 2017, MRT Corp successfully delivered the country’s first MRT line, the 51km MRT Kajang Line. The company is currently moving full speed to complete the MRT Putrajaya Line, with Phase One targeted to commence operation in mid-2021. The entire MRT Putrajaya Line will be operational in January 2023.

MRT Corp has also been appointed as the Malaysian infrastruture company (InfraCo) for the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) Project between Johor Bahru and Singapore. Civil infrastructure work of the project is scheduled for completion by December 2024 while the full opening of the line is targeted to be in December 2026.

MRT Corp also plans and designs future metro rail networks. In all it’s endeavours, it strives to be the catalyst in urban socio-economic regeneration by way of inclusive metro rail transport system and development of transit-oriented communities.

Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) – Malaysian Institute of Architects, is the main national professional institute representing architects in Malaysia. PAM’s principal mission statement is to promote the advancement of Architecture and the architectural profession for the betterment of society.

Founded in 1920 as the Institute of Architects Malaya, its name was changed in 1948 to the Federation of Malaya Society of Architects (FMSA), then allied to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Its current name, reflecting Malaysia’s Independence, came about on 20th January, 1967 when PAM was registered with the Registrar of Societies.

The new PAM Centre, a GBI Platinum-rated building was opened on 19 July 2017, the result of an open architectural competition. PAM’s membership consisting of professional architects, graduates and students, is also represented across Malaysia with member chapters in Sabah, Sarawak, Penang (Northern chapter), East Coast and Johor Bahru (Southern chapter).
